EV Charger Installation in Spain - What Expats Need to Know in 2026

Electric vehicles are arriving fast on the Costa del Sol - home charging is the next question

The number of electric vehicles on Costa del Sol roads has grown significantly over the last three years and shows no sign of slowing. For expats who have made the switch to an EV - or are planning to - home charging is by far the most practical and cost-effective way to keep the car charged. Public charging infrastructure across Malaga province is improving but remains inconsistent, particularly in rural and inland areas.

Installing a home EV charger in Spain involves an electrician, a specific type of charger appropriate for your supply, and in some cases the approval of your comunidad de propietarios. This guide covers what expats need to know before getting quotes.

Types of EV charger available for home installation in Spain

  • Mode 2 - standard domestic socket - plugging your EV into a standard Spanish domestic socket using the cable supplied with the car. Slow - typically 8 to 12 hours for a full charge. No installation required but not recommended as a permanent solution. Standard sockets are not designed for sustained high-current draw and can overheat over time.
  • Mode 3 - dedicated wall box charger - the recommended home charging solution. A dedicated charging unit installed on the wall of your garage or parking area, connected to a dedicated circuit. Significantly faster than a standard socket - typically 4 to 8 hours for a full charge depending on charger output and vehicle battery size.
  • Three-phase supply charger - if your property has a three-phase electricity supply, a three-phase charger can reduce charge times significantly. More common in newer properties and villas. Requires confirmation that your supply is three-phase before specifying.

EV charger installation costs in Spain

  • Standard 7.4kW wall box charger, supply and installation: 800 to 1,500 euros depending on cable run length and brand
  • 11kW three-phase charger, supply and installation: 1,200 to 2,200 euros
  • 22kW three-phase charger, supply and installation: 1,500 to 3,000 euros
  • Additional cable run where parking is remote from consumer unit: 200 to 600 euros depending on distance and method
  • Smart charger with app connectivity and load balancing: add 200 to 500 euros to above prices depending on model

Community of owners rules for EV charger installation

If your parking space is within a comunidad de propietarios, you have a legal right under Spanish law to install an EV charger in your designated parking space. The Ley de Propiedad Horizontal was amended specifically to protect this right. You do not need unanimous approval from the community to install a charger in your own space.

However, you must notify the community president in writing before installation begins. The notification should describe what you intend to install, confirm that the electrical supply and costs will be at your own expense, and confirm that the installation will not affect communal electrical systems. Keep a copy of this notification and any response.

What to check before hiring an EV charger installer in Spain

  • Confirm the installer is a registered Instalador Electrico Autorizado - EV charger installation is electrical work and requires the same registration as any other electrical trade
  • Ask whether the charger they are quoting is compatible with your vehicle and your electricity supply - not all chargers work with all vehicles and supply types
  • Confirm a Certificado de Instalacion Electrica will be provided on completion
  • Ask whether the charger qualifies for any current government subsidy - Spain has periodically offered grants for home EV charger installation and the situation changes regularly
  • For community properties, confirm the installer is aware of the notification process and can advise on it
