Gas Engineers in Spain - Why Registration Matters More Than Any Other Trade

Gas work in Spain is not a trade where corners can be cut

Of all the trades that expats hire on the Costa del Sol, gas engineering is the one where hiring an unregistered or unqualified person carries the most serious consequences. A poorly fitted boiler or a gas connection that does not meet Spanish standards is not just a legal problem, it is a genuine safety risk. Gas leaks, carbon monoxide poisoning, and fires caused by faulty gas installations happen in Spain every year.

The good news is that gas engineers in Spain are tightly regulated, their registration is straightforward to verify, and a legitimate gas engineer will provide the correct certificate on completion of any work. This guide covers exactly what to look for.

What registration must a gas engineer hold in Spain

Any person carrying out gas installation work in Spain must hold a Certificado de Instalador de Gas issued by the regional industrial authority. In Andalusia this is administered by the Junta de Andalucía through the Consejería de Industria, Energía y Minas.

There are several categories of gas installer licence depending on the complexity of work:

  • Category A - authorised for individual domestic installations including boilers, hobs, and standard appliance connections. Covers the majority of work expats need done.
  • Category B - authorised for more complex installations and larger systems.
  • Category C and D - specialist categories covering industrial and large-scale installations. Not relevant for most domestic expat properties.

For standard domestic gas work on a Costa del Sol property, a Category A licensed engineer is sufficient. Ask for the licence certificate and check the expiry date, gas installer licences require periodic renewal.

Gas systems on the Costa del Sol - mains, butano and propano

Not all Costa del Sol properties have access to mains gas, gas natural, particularly in rural areas and smaller inland villages. Properties without mains gas typically run on one of two alternatives:

  • Butano - bottled gas in orange cylinders, supplied by Repsol and widely available across Spain. Used for cooking hobs and smaller water heaters. Cylinders are exchanged rather than refilled and are delivered by local distributors.
  • Propano - higher pressure bottled gas in larger cylinders or bulk tanks, used for central heating boilers and larger appliances. More efficient than butano for heating applications.

A registered gas engineer should be experienced with whichever system your property uses. Not all gas engineers who work on mains gas systems are equally experienced with butano and propano installations, ask specifically about your system type when getting quotes.

What gas work costs in Spain

  • Boiler service and safety check: €100 to €200
  • Gas appliance connection - cooker or hob: €100 to €250
  • Boiler repair, minor: €150 to €350
  • Boiler repair, major: €350 to €700
  • Gas boiler replacement, supply and installation: €1,200 to €2,800
  • New gas installation - connection to mains supply: €800 to €2,500 depending on distance and complexity
  • Butano to propano system conversion: €500 to €1,500 depending on appliances affected

What certificate you should receive after gas work

Any significant gas installation or replacement carried out by a registered engineer must be accompanied by a Certificado de Instalación de Gas. This document is issued through the Consejería de Industria and confirms that the work was carried out to the correct standard by a qualified professional.

Keep this certificate with your property documents. You will need it for insurance purposes, when renewing your gas contract with your supplier, and when you sell the property. A buyer's solicitor will ask for it as part of due diligence.

Never allow unregistered gas work on your property

This cannot be stated clearly enough. An unregistered person carrying out gas work on your property is operating illegally. Any damage caused by that work is unlikely to be covered by your home insurance. If you discover that previous gas work on your property was carried out by an unregistered person, commission a registered gas engineer to inspect and certify the installation before using it further.
