Heating Engineers in Spain - Boilers, Underfloor Heating and What to Budget

Heating in Spain - more important than many expats realise before their first Andalusian winter

The Costa del Sol's reputation for sunshine leads many expats to underestimate how cold Andalusian winters can get. Inland areas around Malaga province regularly see temperatures drop to single figures overnight between November and February. Coastal properties are milder but still cold enough that a property without adequate heating becomes genuinely uncomfortable for several months of the year.

The result is that heating engineers are in consistent demand across the Costa del Sol - not just for breakdowns but for installations, upgrades, and the growing number of expats replacing old systems with more efficient alternatives. This guide covers what to expect.

What heating systems are common in Costa del Sol properties

  • Gas central heating - most common in larger villas and older properties with mains gas connections. A gas boiler connected to radiators throughout the property. Efficient, effective, and familiar to most British expats.
  • Split system air conditioning with heat pump - by far the most common heating solution in Costa del Sol apartments. The same system that cools in summer reverses to heat in winter. Efficient in mild temperatures, less effective when temperatures drop sharply.
  • Electric panel heaters - common in properties without central heating or air conditioning. Cheap to install, expensive to run, and generally inadequate for sustained cold periods.
  • Underfloor heating - increasingly popular in new builds and renovations. Water-based underfloor heating connected to a heat pump or gas boiler is highly efficient. Electric underfloor heating is less expensive to install but more expensive to run.
  • Biomass and pellet boilers - more common in rural inland properties. Wood pellet systems are increasingly competitive on running costs and qualify for certain renewable energy incentives in Spain.
  • Aerothermal heat pumps - growing in popularity as an efficient alternative to gas boilers for both heating and hot water. Government incentives have made installation more attractive in recent years.

What heating engineer work costs in Spain

  • Gas boiler service: 100 to 200 euros
  • Gas boiler replacement, supply and installation: 1,200 to 2,800 euros depending on output and brand
  • Radiator installation, per radiator: 200 to 500 euros including pipework connections
  • Full central heating installation, three-bedroom villa: 8,000 to 18,000 euros depending on system specification
  • Underfloor heating installation, per square metre: 40 to 90 euros for water-based systems including pipework and manifold
  • Aerothermal heat pump, supply and installation: 6,000 to 14,000 euros depending on capacity
  • Pellet boiler installation: 5,000 to 12,000 euros including flue and storage hopper

Government incentives for heating upgrades in Spain

Spain has a programme of grants and subsidies for energy-efficient heating upgrades - the Plan de Recuperacion - that covers certain heat pump installations, solar thermal systems, and biomass boilers. The available amounts and eligibility criteria change regularly, so checking current availability with a registered heating engineer or your gestor before committing to a system is worthwhile. On a significant installation, the grant contribution can be meaningful.

What to check before hiring a heating engineer in Spain

  • For gas work, confirm the engineer holds a valid Certificado de Instalador de Gas - gas heating work requires specific gas registration regardless of the heating engineer's other qualifications
  • Ask for references from heating installations comparable to yours - a heating engineer experienced with aerothermal systems may have limited experience with underfloor heating and vice versa
  • Confirm liability insurance is in place with a valid seguro de responsabilidad civil
  • For new system installations, ask what manufacturer guarantee applies and whether the engineer is an authorised installer for that brand - some manufacturer guarantees are only valid when installed by an accredited installer
  • Confirm that a Certificado de Instalacion will be provided on completion of any gas or significant electrical heating work
