Plumbers in Spain - Registrations, Costs and Finding One You Can Trust
Plumbing emergencies do not wait for a convenient moment
A burst pipe in a Costa del Sol apartment does not care whether it is August, a Sunday evening, or the day before you are due to fly back to the UK. It cares even less whether you have a reliable plumber's number saved in your phone. The expats who handle plumbing emergencies well are the ones who found a trustworthy fontanero before anything went wrong.
This guide covers everything expats need to know about plumbers in Spain, what registration to look for, what work costs, and how to find one you can actually rely on.
Do plumbers in Spain need to be registered
Plumbing in Spain sits in a slightly different regulatory position to electrical and gas work. Electricians and gas engineers must hold specific regional certifications to carry out their work legally. Plumbing on domestic water systems is less tightly regulated at the individual tradesperson level, though plumbers connecting to mains water supplies or carrying out work on communal systems should be registered with the local water authority or ayuntamiento.
What matters practically is whether the plumber operates as a legitimate registered business. Ask for their NIF, confirm they will provide a proper invoice including IVA, and verify that they hold a seguro de responsabilidad civil. A plumber operating as a registered autónomo or through a company who invoices properly is accountable in a way that a cash-only, no-invoice operator is not.

The hard water issue across the Costa del Sol
Hard water is a consistent and underappreciated problem across much of the Costa del Sol and Málaga province. The calcium content of the water supply in many areas causes scale build-up in boilers, pipes, shower heads, and appliances at a rate that significantly shortens their working life. A boiler that would last fifteen years in a soft water area of the UK may need replacing after eight years on the Costa del Sol without proper maintenance and descaling.
A reliable plumber working in the area will raise this with you proactively. Annual boiler descaling, installation of a scale inhibitor, and awareness of the symptoms of scale build-up are all part of sensible property maintenance on the Costa del Sol.

- Do you hold liability insurance and can I see the certificate?
- Do you have experience with the type of system in my property, gas boiler, solar hot water, electric water heater, borehole supply?
- Is the call-out fee inclusive of the first hour of labour or is labour charged on top?
- For rural properties: do you have experience with septic tanks and borehole water systems?
