Solar Panel Installation in Spain - Costs, Grants and Finding a Registered Installer
Solar panels on the Costa del Sol, one of the strongest cases in Europe
Andalusia ranks among the sunniest regions in Europe, receiving over 3,000 hours of sunshine per year across much of the Costa del Sol and inland Malaga province. The financial case for residential solar photovoltaic installation here is genuinely strong, stronger than in the UK, northern France, or Germany where the same technology is widely adopted. The combination of high solar yield, rising electricity prices in Spain, and available government incentives makes solar worth serious consideration for most Costa del Sol homeowners.
How a residential solar photovoltaic system works in Spain
A residential solar PV system converts sunlight into electricity that is used directly within the property. Any surplus electricity generated beyond the property's immediate consumption can either be stored in batteries for later use, or exported to the grid in exchange for a compensation payment from your electricity supplier - known as autoconsumo con excedentes. The system consists of solar panels (modulos fotovoltaicos) typically mounted on the roof south-facing for maximum yield in Andalusia, an inverter (inversor) that converts DC electricity into AC electricity used by household appliances, optional battery storage (bateria) that stores surplus electricity for use when the panels are not generating, and a monitoring system that allows you to monitor generation, consumption, and export in real time.

Government grants and incentives for solar in Spain
Spain's Plan de Recuperacion, Transformacion y Resiliencia includes grants for residential solar PV and battery storage installations. In Andalusia, these are administered through the Junta de Andalucia's energy agency, Agencia Andaluza de la Energia. Grant programmes open and close depending on available funding. When open, they can contribute meaningfully to installation costs. A good installer will be aware of currently available programmes and factor them into their proposal. Your gestor can also advise on current eligibility and application requirements.
Grid registration, mandatory and your installer's responsibility
Any solar installation that exports surplus electricity to the grid must be registered with the grid operator and your electricity distributor. This process known as tramitacion del autoconsumo is mandatory and should be handled by your installer as part of their service. Ask your installer explicitly whether grid registration is included in their quote. A reputable installer handles the complete process.
What to check before hiring a solar installer in Spain
- Confirm they are a registered Instalador Electrico Autorizado, solar installation is electrical work and requires the same registration as any other electrical trade
- Ask for references from completed installations of similar size in the local area
- Ask which panel and inverter brands they use and why, established brands with proven performance in Spanish conditions and good local service networks are significantly preferable
- Confirm grid registration is included in the quoted price
- Ask what manufacturer and installation warranties apply, panels should carry a minimum twenty-five year performance warranty from reputable manufacturers
- Confirm a Certificado de Instalacion Electrica will be provided on completion
